The terms, first world, second world and third world all were invented in the 1940's. 
These are the problems each grouping had at the time.

First World problems 
Threat of communism 

 Second World Problems
Being bigger and better than USA

Third World Problems

Africa - on it's own and needed support. Northern Africa gets Soviet help and central and south get Western aid.
