Colour Theory, Pantone Matching

Objects

Yellow Selfridges bag

The bag becomes brighter against the red background, on the yellow the different tones comes through. The green dulls the yellow tone and the blue makes it stand out more.

Red peg

The saturation changes on the yellow paper as the peg becomes more bright. Its tonally darker on the red and blue paper. The hue doesn't change much.

Green purse

The tone changes on the yellow paper as the purse becomes more yellow, and becomes more yellow in hue against the yellow paper. Against the blue it looks more green.
The red dulls the green down, as the yellow brightens it and the blue paper makes it stand out more.

Orange cupcake paper

The tone of the object changes when its put agasint the yellow paper, it beomces lighter.
The hues are similar on the red and orange papers.
Orange dulls down in saturation due to red paper.
It stands out against yellow.

We then colour matched the objects using the Pantone swatches

And the same with the paper

With that information we were able to create the colour of the objects on photoshop to the nearest screen match.

These colour swatches are the matches to the paper and the colour circles below are the colour matches of the objects.

It was difficult to match these colours exact because Photoshop did not have the exact same stock options as us such as coated matte etc.

Type Journal, 9

Absolut Vodka

I really like Absolut as a brand, its aware of art, it has a very strong look and takes time over the whole branding. I like their use of type because they'e used a modern font to communicate they're a modern up to date brand. The bold works well because vodka is bold, it's a very strong drink that has a lot of after affect which I think Absolut want to get across with their type. I think the use of script works well to juxtapose the modern brand and the history of the brand.

Type Journal, 8

Northumberland County Council

I found this sign on a walk in a local woods one day and it just caught my eye. I think it really suits Northumberland as a county and suits the area I was in. Northumberland is one of the biggest county's in the country with a lot of woods and greenery, i think this font shows the rustic woodland kind of place it is. It's also a bitch witchy and mystical which relate well to woods. I think the hand rendered look is very successful and good to look at.

Type Journal, 7

Moet

This is a really old bottle of Moet Champagne, about 25 years. I think the overall look of this label doesn't suit the grandness of Moet Champagne. However I like the fact the main part is all upper case and the smaller less important parts aren't, drawing the eye to the centre. I think the font could be a bit different from a quite a normal Roman font. Script may have worked well on this label.

Type Journal, 6

Gordon's Gin

I don't think I'm a fan of this font at all for this bottle. The script style is too big for the bottle and is difficult to read. It shouldn't all be in script, especially the small description. I think if it just had 'Gordon's' in script font it would work a lot better. I don't like the loops that are nearly touching as well.

Type Journal, 5

Southern Comfort.

My friend showed me this old bottle of Southern Comfort she had at home which I absolutely love.
I feel like you can tell it's old because theres a lot of detail and hand rendered elements to the design, I think older design shows a lot more time has been spent on it.

I think the font is really important on this bottle because Southern Comfort are big on showing it's an old business from New Orleans, and this font definitely shows this. I think it communicates the old brass based music that New Orleans is famous for.

Design Principles, Hierachys, Websites

I've looked at three different news websites which I think have different styles and standings for the news.

Channel 4

This first image is just to show what website it is, there isn't enough content on there so I had to scroll down.

I saw this first because of the size and colour, which lead me to the next image.

I looked at this next because it was red on black and right next to the title I had just looked at.

After looking at that I remembered the first title and image and looked at the quote underneath.

My eyes did the same thing as before, where I've read one thing on the left and went to the next on the right.

Which lead me to this section which is separated by layout I think so doesn't get a lot of my attention.

I looked at this top bar last because it's not that noticeable within the whole page.

ITV News

This caught my eye first because of the white against black and separation from the rest of the page.

This layout was very simple, it was easy to read from left to right which I did with these stories.

I looked at this after the first three stories because it was below them and more text without an image, so my eye wasn't drawn to them as quickly.

I looked at the search bar last again because it's not part of the page properly.

Sky News

The homepage didn't give enough content so I scrolled down a bit to the stories.

This page worked out the same as ITV, it was very easy where I read the frist story and went from left to right.

After reading from left to right I went down the page onto these stories and then across to the others, since they're laid out like columns.

This was very seperate I thought to the rest of the page because theres no yellow which made me see it last.
